WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 2008

World Environment Day, commemorated each year on 5 June, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.

The World Environment Day will highlight resources and initiatives that promote low carbon economies and life-styles, such as improved energy efficiency, alternative energy sources, forest conservation and eco-friendly consumption.

BAN ON INCANDESCENT LAMPS

Consumers and the environment alike would benefit from replacing the familiar incandescent lamps with energy-saving compact fluorescent light bulbs instead, believes MP Christina Gestrin (Swedish People’s Party). However, the cheaper price of the traditional light bulbs will cause people to continue to buy them, until such time as they are banned

At present, some 80% of the electricity used for lighting by Finnish households is consumed by incandescent bulbs, the standard filament lamps. Replacing them with energy-saving lamps would save around 900 gigawatthours of electricity, which equals the annual electricity consumption of 50,000 households. The calculation is based on the estimated energy consumption for 2010.

Incandescent lamps are the ones that you're most accustomed to seeing used in residential lighting, and yet they have really only one major advantage over fluorescent lamps: The light they produce has a warm cast that is soft, natural, and flattering to skin tones.

Fluorescent lighting is a type of electrical lamp choice that works through the use of mercury and neon gas, producing a chemical reaction; standard incandescent bulbs, on the other hand, work by reacting to heat. Fluorescent lighting used to be office-only lightning, but is now becoming more and more popular in homes because of their many advantages. If you are considering fluorescent lighting for your home, here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of this type of lighting to help you decide if it's right for you.

ADVANTAGES - Fluorescent lighting is 66 percent cheaper than regular lighting while providing the same brightness. When you consider that a quarter of any home's electrical consumption is done through light bulbs, the savings can add up considerably. Fluorescent lighting lasts longer. On average, a fluorescent tube has a lifespan six times longer than a regular incandescent bulb. They tend to burn less after continuous use, and can be turn on and off without being afraid of burning it. Fluorescent lighting does not give off heat, which makes them great for area lightning and for areas where additional heat can cause equipment to malfunction or bother the users

On the eve on World Environment Day ICWO organized “A Campaign on Global Warming”.

A Huge Campaign Board with slogan “Stop using me” was covered with Incandescent Bulbs followed by a slogan “Save Our World” covered by florescent light.

Ln. Dr. R.P. Dharmalingam, Industrialist, chief guest and inaugurated the campaign by switching on the campaign board. A Group of volunteers broke the incandescent bulbs as a symbol to stop using the incandescent bulbs.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. A.J. Hariharan, Founder Secretary, ICWO says that this effort by ICWO is the first initiative towards having a cleaner and healthier environment which will help to create a better world for the next generation. ICWO will take efforts to involve youth in its upcoming campaign to effectively stop usage of incandescent bulbs.

Banning the bulb is an easily implementable initiative which will address this problem along with the issue of chronic energy shortage in India. It will positively impact India’s economic development and create a win-win situation for the country says Hariharan.
